Ginkgo biloba, or Japanese ginkgo or biloba, is a tree with characteristic, fan-shaped leaves, belonging to the ginkgo family (Ginkgoaceae). The original origin of the plant is China, from where it spread to other parts of Asia - Korea and Japan, and eventually also gained popularity on other continents. Ginkgo leaves have a long history of use and have already been used in Chinese medicine, where they were consumed in the form of medicinal infusions.
Ginkgo biloba contains many valuable ingredients, such as rutin, quercetin, kaempferol or isorhamnetin included in the wider group of flavone glycosides, as well as ginkgolides and bilobalide belonging to the group of terpene lactones. Both groups of compounds are considered to be the main biologically active ingredients that give ginkgo biloba unique, health-promoting properties.
