Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR, ALC) is an organic chemical compound that is the acetylated form of L-Carnitine. It is the most abundant naturally occurring derivative of this amino acid in the human body. It also appears to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier and exhibit activity in the nervous system due to its ethyl moiety.
In the human body, carnitine plays an important role in cellular energy production. Its main tasks include transporting long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria so that they can be oxidized, which process results finally in cellular energy production.
