Sodium butyrate (butyric acid) is a fundamental energy source for the gastrointestinal epithelium. Microencapsulation technology, unlike standard forms of butyric acid, prevents complete release of butyric acid in the upper gastrointestinal tract and allows for its delivery to the small and large intestines. The microcapsule passes with the chyme into the small intestine and then on to the large intestine, where further amounts of sodium butyrate are released. The microcapsule composition is designed to ensure sodium butyrate release occurs throughout the entire length of the small and large intestines.

Aliness sodium butyrate is the only product on the market that uses stearic acid, not hydrogenated palm oil, to encapsulate the active ingredient. Stearic acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid that, due to its specific nature, cannot be hydrogenated/hydrogenated because it is a saturated fatty acid.
