Resveratrol is a compound found in the skin of red grapes and is a well-known and powerful antioxidant. Only 2% of oral resveratrol is absorbed as pure resveratrol. Resveratrol is metabolized in the small intestine to resveratrol glucuronide and resveratrol sulfate, allowing about 50% of the orally ingested dose to be absorbed by active transport. This 2% absorption has been increased by the liposomal encapsulation.
