Lactase is an enzyme that is responsible for the process of digesting lactose, both in human milk and in milk of animal origin. The compound catalyzes the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose, also called milk sugar, to two molecules of simple sugars - glucose and galactose. Mammalian lactase, also called β-D-galactosidase, is an enzyme, which is naturally produced in the epithelium of the small intestine.
The role of lactase is to improve the digestion of lactose in people who have difficulty digesting lactose and a deficiency of the compound in body may have a number of consequences, i.a. contribute to the occurrence of lactose intolerance.
