Astaxanthin belongs to the group of carotenoids - the natural colourings that are responsible for the bright red of tomatoes or the vibrant orange of carrots, among other things. Astaxanthin is particularly concentrated in certain types of algae, such as the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, also known as blood rain algae.
This microscopically small green algae - just 0.05 mm in size - is able to produce astaxanthin in remarkably high concentrations. In nature, this pigment protects the algae from intense sunlight and extreme environmental conditions.
Today, Haematococcus pluvialis is cultivated under controlled conditions to produce high-quality, natural astaxanthin - an impressive combination of colour, nature and innovation.
