Under this mysterious name there is a plant called harpagophytum procumbens, originating from the Kalahari desert in southern Africa. The common name "devil's" or "devil's claw" refers to the structure of the fruit of this plant, characterized by numerous hard barbs, resembling hooks or claws. The fruits latch on to the animals' fur so that the seeds are distributed as they wander.
In supplementation, dried and powdered roots are used, which have been used for centuries by the Khoisan people in southern Africa for arthritis and indigestion.
Many of the benefits of devil's claw have been attributed to a compound known as harpagoside. The plant is commonly used as support for joints, ligaments, tendons, bones and muscles. Regular supplementation with devil's claw: strengthens the locomotor system and joint health, supports appetite and improves digestion.
