Gurmar ( Gymnema sylvestris ) is an Indian plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family . In Ayurveda, it is used to control body weight and improve metabolism. Gurmar inhibits the sensation of sweet taste and has a hypoglycemic effect, which is why it is called the "sugar killer". Gurmar GS4® contains an extract standardized to 75% gymnemic acids.
The main compounds responsible for the biological activity of gurmar are glycosides - gymnemic acids. These substances stimulate insulin secretion, regenerate pancreatic β cells, stimulate glucose absorption in skeletal muscles, inhibit glucose absorption in the small intestine, reduce appetite for sweet products, increase the activity of enzymes responsible for glucose utilization, and reduce the level of glycogen in the liver. Gymnemic acids block taste receptors and inhibit the perception of sweet or bitter taste.
