Taurine, also called 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is a conditionally essential organic amino acid that is produced in the body as a breakdown product of cysteine, among other things. For the heart, muscle, liver, bladder function and vision, taurine plays essential roles in the organism. For example, taurine can act as an antioxidant and positively support blood flow and general cardiovascular functions. In plant foods, taurine is only present in very small amounts, which is why a supply via dietary supplements can be particularly useful in vegan diets. People with very low levels of taurine may in part be more susceptible to damage from environmental sheep substances - such as aldehydes, chlorine and amines.
